According to a chart released by Statista, the four worst states for corruption in the US are New York, Illinois, California, and Texas.
New York
Corruption in New York state is an issue that has dogged the region for years. In 2019, the FBI arrested six politicians in Albany, the state capital, for bribery, extortion, wire fraud, and other charges. This followed the 2018 arrest of former state assembly speaker Sheldon Silver for orchestrating a bribery scheme involving $4 million. In 2002, two of the state’s highest-ranking politicians were convicted of taking bribes, kickbacks, and other forms of corruption. Based on the evidence, it appears New York is one of the most corrupt states in the US.
Unfortunately, the problem seems to be getting worse. In 2019, there were more arrests of politicians on corruption charges than in any other year. A total of 13 current and former public officials were arrested, including the Mayor of Newburgh, who was charged with conspiracy, fraud and bribery. This is a disturbing trend that could have a long-term impact on the state’s economy and political system.
New York state needs to focus on clamping down on corruption if it wants to move forward and create a more prosperous and equitable society for all its citizens. More stringent measures must be taken to ensure that politicians and public officials are held accountable for any and all corruption. Illinois
Illinois is another state plagued by corruption. According to the FBI, 27 public officials and lobbyists have been convicted in the state since 2011 – one of the highest totals in the US. In 2013, the Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, was convicted of bribery, extortion, and other charges, for attempting to sell the Senate seat left vacant by Barack Obama. His successor, Governor Pat Quinn, was forced to resign in 2017 over allegations of misconduct.
These convictions show that the issue of corruption in Illinois is a serious one and needs to be addressed. There needs to be more accountability and transparency from public officials in order to ensure that any form of corruption is rooted out. More stringent measures need to be taken to prevent public officials from taking advantage of their positions, as well as better laws to punish any transgressions.

California
Corruption is also a problem in the state of California. In 2017, the City of Bell officials had the dishonor of being charged with misappropriating $5.5 million from the city’s coffers. They were accused of padding their salaries with taxpayers’ money and exploiting their positions for personal gain. The case made headlines as it demonstrated how badly the state’s anti-corruption laws were being enforced.
This isn’t the only example of corruption in California. In 2019, an LA County assessor was convicted of taking bribes in return for lower property tax assessments. In 2018, a former city councilman in Signal Hill was arrested for bribery and money laundering. And in 2015, a former LA County supervisor was charged with bribery, embezzlement and misuse of public funds.
Clearly, California has a long way to go in tackling corruption. The state needs to take a more proactive approach, with harsher penalties for those who are caught. It should also provide better methods of oversight and enforcement, so that public officials are held accountable for their actions. By doing this, California can create a fairer and more equitable society.
Texas
Texas is another state that has a corruption problem. A 2018 report found that between 2008 and 2016, 49 Texas state representatives were indicted on charges of bribery, fraud, and other corruption-related offences. In 2013, a former Texas mayor was indicted on federal bribery charges for accepting cash payments from developers. And in 2015, a former state legislator was convicted of bribery and money laundering for accepting payments for legislative action.
The problem of corruption in Texas appears to be getting worse. In 2019, a former Texas judge was arrested for taking bribes and kickbacks for awarding contracts to a personal friend. And in 2017, a former Texas state representative was arrested on charges of fraud, bribery, and abuse of office.
